Medication Errors - Prediction and Prevention Strategies

"It is 9 a.m. and you are starting out at Room 201. You must have your medications completed in 1 hour so that you can attend a meeting with your nurse manager for your annual performance appraisal. If you can finish before that, you'll have time for a cup of coffee in the nurses' lounge."

Our Medication program covers the latest research on predicting and preventing medication errors. In addition, it contains a true to life simulation where the staff nurse must pass meds on a 24 bed unit.

In order to correctly administer a medication the user must:

1. Identify the correct meds to be administered.
2. Click the correct drawer on the Medication Cart.
3. Click on the correct bed number of the room.
4. Confirm the correct patient using their ID bracelet.
5. Correctly answer any medication questions.
6. Chart all medications given.

The user can earn bonus points during the simulation by identifying situations that have potential for causing medication errors. For example, if the patient has allergies identified on the MAR but no allergy wrist band, a click on their wrist will earn 50 bonus points.
